Studies Project: Dancer as Agent

Movement Research Studies Project
MON November 10 at 6:15pm
Gibney Dance Center
890 Broadway between 19th and 20th streets

DANCER AS AGENT
Conceived by Cecilia Roos in partnership with Iréne Hultman
Panelists include: Hilary Clark and Juliette Mapp

Within the field of dance, the creation process often demands that dancers develop methodologies, movement vocabularies and conceptual frames. Previously seen as the exclusive domain of choreographers, dramaturges and directors, these procedural boundaries are now shifting and eroding creative hierarchies in live performance. This has produced new, mostly undocumented relationships to working processes and bodies of knowledge. The Dancer as Agent began in 2013 as a conference held at University of Dance and Circus (DOCH) in Sweden. This conversation will focus on some of the topics that emerged from that conference.

I AM ONE WHO Workshop with Raïna von Waldenburg

July 28-30 2014
Monday-Wednesday 12-4pm
Gibney Dance Center, 890 Broadway
$120

Developed during the past 21 years by Raïna von Waldenburg and based on the physical actor training of Jerzy Grotowski and Stephen Wangh (An Acrobat of the Heart), this innovative approach to performance teaches artists to embody the present moment with barefaced sincerity. A series of physical presence exercises trains the performer to literally bring all parts of him/herself into the work, generating impulses that are utterly alive, surprisingly truthful, and emotionally resonant. Performers learn to develop constructive vocabulary for giving and receiving critical feedback in an ensemble-based environment where peers are vital to the learning process.

Taking two everyday forms of movement, we will allow these forms to disorganize within, and be disorganizing of, our bodies. This will lead us to understandings of function and form, and the creative potential within experiential states of disorder. As we explore in solo, duet, and ensemble improvisations, moving periodically in contact and/or with eyes closed, lines between states of order and disorder will be at times stark and at others blurred. The sensations that arise within this unstable and unbound matrix range from relaxing to energizing, chaotic to cathartic, disorienting to freeing.

Classes this week with…
Nia Love. Morning Class
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10:00am – 12:00pm. $14
Eden’s Expressway, 537 Broadway
Class starts with across the floor rhythmic gaits that investigate independence in the body. Stacking sequential rhythmic patterns build on cardio and core work that emphasizes a feminine-derived energy where conical movement attaches to the base of the spine and radiates up through the core and out to the extremities. Center floor exercises focus on skeletal-muscular motion; rotations, isolations, and weight shifts explore a more grounded approach. The incorporation of a more crisp sensibility to an urban approach that partners up with African, postmodern, Butoh, funk and blues sensibilities. The goal: to break down inhibitions, fine tune modern techniques, yet approach dance with a sense of abandonment!

Levi Gonzalez. Morning Class.
Tuesday & Thursday. 10:00am – 12:00pm. $14.
Danspace Project, 131 E. 10th Street.

Using the morning technique class structure as a model, this class will focus on dance as a physical, conceptual, and experiential practice, with an emphasis on cultivating presence inside of the forms. Class often begins with imagery and gentle preparation culled from various body-based somatic modalities that access our awareness of the organs, the skeleton, gravity, and energetic pathways through the architecture of the body and into the space. Class may also include technical exercises, choreographic structures, improvisations, and performance constructs, taking our time to engage with these materials with precision, imagination, and a thorough and informed sense of embodiment.

6pm. Gibney Dance Center, 890 Broadway, 5th Floor. FREE.
Conceived by Amanda Loulaki and Susan Mar Landau

The dramaturg as an active participant in the conceiving and making of movement-based works is a relatively new and evolving phenomenon. Conceived as a two-part event, Dramaturgy as Practice/Dramaturgy in Practice will explore both the ontology and the workings of dance dramaturgy today. This second event will bring together dramaturgs, choreographers and dancers to engage in an in-depth conversation on the experience, effect and possible implications of the presence of the dramaturg in the choreographic process.
