2011 Artists in Residence
Rebecca Patek began her artistic life training in classical ballet at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Now she creates performance that is a synthesis of dance, theater and comedy. Patek was a 2010-11 Artist in Residence at Dance Theater Workshop as part of Fresh Tracks Performance and Residency Program. Her work has been presented at Dance Theater Workshop, Joyce Soho, Movement Research at Judson Church, Dixon Place, Mulberry St Theatre, The Tank, Aunts, Triskelion Arts, The LoFt, The Overture Center (Madison WI), Brickyard Pond (NH), and Nexus Foundation for Today's Art, among others. In 2008 she worked with Master Artist Susan Marshall as Associate Artist in Residence at Atlantic Center for the Arts. Patek’s film collaboration, The Princess and The Vagicorn, was shown at Philadelphia Dance Project’s Motion Pictures 2009. She performed in Denmark with Live Arts Installations and Half Machine and numerous artists, musicians and choreographers nationally.
Michal Samama is a choreographer and performer combining in her work elements from the performing-art and visual-arts. She was raised in Israel where she studied dance and choreography at ‘Ha-kibbutzim’ College and theater, writing and performance art at an Interdisciplinary Art Program in Jaffa-Tel Aviv. Her choreography work was presented in many prominent venues in Israel. Her play 'Hide and seek' was presented in the Haifa Fringe Festival (2009). since 2008 Michal created a series of solo performances that have been presented in Tel Aviv, Berlin and NYC. Since arriving to NYC in January 2010 she performed at Movement Research at Judson Church, Joyce Soho, 92nd Street Y, Dixon Place, Priska C. David Thomson is a collaborative artist who has worked in the fields of dance, music, and performance since the early 80¹s with such artists as Mel Wong, Remy Charlip, Jane Comfort, Trisha Brown (1987-93), Bebe Miller, Sekou Sundiata, Dean Moss/Layla Ali, Susan Rethorst, Meg Stuart, Ralph Lemon and Marina Abramovic among many others. He was a founding member of the a cappella performance group, Hot Mouth. Thomson was honored with Bessies in 2001 for Sustained Achievement and 2006 as part of the creative team of Landing/Place. He has taught nationally and internationally, as well as serving on the faculties of Sarah Lawrence College, Movement Research and the Experimental Theater Wing at NYU. His work has been presented by Danspace Project, The Kitchen and Dance Theater Workshop. Presently he is co-designing a media archive database for the Trisha Brown Company.
2010 Artists in Residence
Anna Azrieli is a dance artist, originally from the Soviet Union, residing in Brooklyn. She has performed with Luciana Achugar, Donna Uchizono, Levi Gonzalez, Sam Kim, Wendy Perron, Fred Darsow, Erin Cornell, Olase Freeman, Maya Ciarrocchi, and Freefall. She is a founding member of Miguel Gutierrez & the Powerful People. With the group, she worked as a collaborator/performer in Everyone (2007), Retrospective Exhibitionist/Difficult Bodies (2005), dAMNATION rOAD (2004), I succumb (2003), and enter the seen (2001). She has performed at internationally-recognized venues including Dance Theater Workshop (New York, NY), Abrons Art Center at the Henry Street Settlement (New York, NY), the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, MN), Live Philly Arts Festival (Philadelphia, PA), Springdance Festival (Utrecht, the Netherlands), and ImpulseTanz (Vienna, Austria). Her solo work has been presented by Dixon Place’s Brink series and by Danspace Project’s DraftWork series. Her collaborative work with Abby Crain and Samuel Topiary (in the trio Crowd), and with Pascale Wettstein has been presented through Movement Research at the Judson Church and Dixon Place’s Body Blend. She recently made a group piece on students at University of Texas – Pan American. Anna has over fifteen years experience teaching a variety of movement forms. She is inspired by her study of Body-Mind Centering, Authentic Movement, improvisation and yoga. She holds a BFA in Dance from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Laurie Berg is a Brooklyn-based artist who works in several different mediums including dance/performance, 2D collage, and jewelry generating. She was born in St. Louis, MO and graduated with a BFA in Dance from the University of Arizona in Tucson. Her current work is influenced by her former life as a rhythm tapper, her interest in collage and her dedication to the art of collaboration. Laurie currently collaborates with dance artists Siri Peterson, Bessie McDonough-Thayer, Megan Byrne and architect/visual artist Liliana Dirks-Goodman. Most recently Laurie has shown her various projects at the ICMC at Stony Brook University, the TANK, Movement Research at the Judson Church and DraftWork at Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church among others. Laurie also enjoys dancing with Christine Elmo, Sasha Welsh/Victory To Others and Laura Diffenderfer. She appeared in Tom Murrin’s The Talking Show, at PS122, directed by Lucy Sexton in March 2010. In July of 2009 Laurie went to Lexington, VA for a weeklong residency as part of the Rockbridge Artist Exchange, a program of the CDCT. She was a 2009 Bessie Lab participant, under the guidance of Reggie Wilson. Rebecca Davis creates choreography that yields sculpture. She is a 2010 Movement Research Artist-in-Residence. Her performance work has been supported by a commission from The Howl Festival (Commission for a New Short Work) and by residencies from Baryshnikov Arts Center, Dance Theater Workshop (Studio Series, Outer/Space), The Atlantic Center for the Arts (Associate Artist Residency with Susan Marshall) and The Field (Artward Bound Choreographic Residency at Earthdance, FAR space grant). It has been presented by The Chocolate Factory, Dance Theater Workshop (Studio Series), Danspace Project (Food for Thought), Movement Research at the Judson Church, Chelsea Art Museum, The Old American Can Factory, P.S. 122, DiverseWorks (Houston, TX), and Performance Works Northwest (Portland, OR). Davis’s sculpture and installations have been presented by the Linfield Gallery (Portland, OR) and the Pierro Gallery (South Orange, NJ). Davis established the Dance Forum series at The Brooklyn Museum and served as its curator from 2001-2006. She received a Brooklyn Arts Exchange Passing It On Award in 2003 for her work on this program, which presented thematic dance programs in conjunction with the Museum’s rotating exhibitions. Rebecca was the Director of Education for the Trisha Brown Dance Company, where she worked from 2002-2010. She is a certified practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method and has taught at Movement Research, The Feldenkrais Institute of New York, The Feldenkrais Learning Center, Mark Morris Studio and Trisha Brown Studio. Rebecca Davis has performed in the work of Ursula Eagly, Deborah Hay, Stephanie Lazzara, Juliette Mapp, RoseAnne Spradlin, Ansley Vandenbroucke, Kathy Westwater, and Christopher Williams. Davis was a Re-performer of Point of Contact in the Marina Abramovic retrospective: The Artist is Present at the Museum of Modern Art March-May 2010.
Walter Dundervill is a dance artist living in New York City. He is a 2010-2011 Movement Research Artist in Residence. In February 2011, Dance Theater Workshop will present his newest work, “Aesthetic Destiny 1: Candy Mountain”. His dance “Dear Emissary,…” was presented at the Chocolate Factory in March of 2010. Two previous works were presented at DTW – “You Wrote the Book”, 2008 (on a shared bill with Heather Olsen) and “Would You Read My Poetry?” 2007 (as part of the Nothing Festival curated by Tere O’Connor). He created a three- hour installation/ performance entitled Room at Fred Torres Collaborations as part of the Movement Research Spring Festival 2009. Dundervill has danced for many choreographers including Keely Garfield and RoseAnne Spradlin. In 2003, he won a Bessie award for his performance in Spradlin’s under/world. He has also worked with visual/performance artists including Bruce Nauman, Pat Olezsko, and David Wojnarowicz. He has taught and performed as a guest artist at The University of Wisconsin, Madison, Frostburg State Univeristy, MD, the Staadtstheater in Magdeburg, Germany, and for ClassClassClass in NYC. Dundervill was a co-curator of the Movement Research Spring Festival 2010. He received a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Georgia.
Chase Granoff is a Brooklyn based dance artist. He has worked as a dancer with many choreographers including RoseAnne Spradlin, Jeremy Wade, Beth Gill and Daria Faïn. His choreography has been presented throughout NYC and has toured to Limerick, Berlin and Prague. He has collaborated extensively with Jon Moniaci. Chase co-curated Live Sh-- at the Chocolate Factory with Chris Peck from 2005 to 2008. He is a member of heart the band with Eleanor Bauer, Gill, Moniaci and Peck. He initiated and curates Lobby TALKS at Dance Theater Workshop. Chase recently published and co-edited a publication with Jenn Joy in conjunction with his most recent performance, The Art of Making Dances, at The Kitchen. Other recent projects include teaching and curating the event ROLLING at Daghdha in Limerick, Ireland, teaching as part of CLASSCLASSCLASS in NYC and teaching a workshop in Montevideo, Uruguay at Espacio Jexe! Upcoming projects include a return to Daghdha and the creation of a new piece to be premiered in November 2011.
Yve Laris Cohen makes things that happen in time, and almost always involve bodies. He received a BA in Dance & Performance Studies and Art Practice from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008. Since moving to Brooklyn the following year, Yve has shown performances at Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church, The Tank, Dixon Place, Ulla’s House, Movement Research at the Judson Church, FAÇADE/FASAD, The Chocolate Factory, Kunstverein NY, Winkleman Gallery, Kara Walker’s 6 to 8 Months, The Convent of St. Ceceilia, The Miriam & Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery, and his apartment. As a performer, Yve has had the pleasure of working with Miguel Gutierrez, Jenny MaryTai Liu, and the National Theater of the United States of America. Yve will receive an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University in 2011.
Ben Spatz and Maximilian Balduzzi are URBAN RESEARCH THEATER, a small collective dedicated to developing original performances out of a continous, long-term practice of embodied research. As a Brooklyn based artist, Miriam Wolf has shown work throughout New York and beyond. Most recently, in May of 2010, her project in our days of burning was presented by Dixon Place. Since 2008, she has also been a member of The Summit—a collaborative effort between a sculptor, video artist, glassblower and herself. She has been a space grant awardee through Brooklyn Arts Exchange and The Field, and a visiting artist/resident to White Oak Plantation, through New Dance Alliance. She has collaborated and performed to acclaim with artists including Natalie Green, Daniel Linehan, Andrew Dinwiddie, and Sam Kim. Ms. Wolf is most interested in creating emotionally stimulating work by engaging and focusing on the extremes of her brain’s capability to communicate simultaneously with both her verbal and physical body during performance.
